OUR FAITH
- There is one all-loving personal God, and He is the Lord Jesus Christ.
- The Lord gives everyone the ability to recognize good and evil, and the freedom to choose between them.
- The life of religion is to obey the Ten Commandments, and to act honestly and faithfully in our daily occupations.
- The whole Bible, even where it is actual history, is a parable teaching about the Lord and about a person's
spiritual development.
- Each of us continues life as a complete person immediately after the death of the body.
- Marriage is a Divine institution. It is a holy covenant made before the Lord between one man and one woman.
A true marriage continues in heaven, and the love between husband and wife grows forever.
- People of every faith are saved if they live sincerely according to their religion.
OUR SERVICES
Visitors are always welcome to join us in our worship of the Lord Jesus Christ. We hold church services each
Sunday, with the exception of August. Services begin at 11.00am.
Children are welcome to attend. There is a message specially for them near the beginning of the service. The
children then leave to attend a Sunday School program.
OUR CHURCH BUILDING
In 1860, the Church of the New Jerusalem became the third church to be organized in Glendale. Construction
began on the church on Good Friday, March 29, 1861. The official dedication took place on October 6, 1861. The
church was built on land donated by Charles H. Allen, and was designed by architect Peter Mullet, in close cooperation
with the Rev. James P. Stuart. The church was built on the cruciform plan, with a paired gable spire planted in
the intersection of the roofs, reflecting the paired and triple pointed windows of the principal elevation. Additional
verticality is achieved by board and batten siding.
This lovely little Gothic frame church was built among existing old trees. Plans for a new addition began in 1980
and were completed in 1981. Its purpose is to house Sunday School, doctrinal study classes, and church gatherings.
OUR HISTORY
The Church of the New Jerusalem was first established in England in 1792, by readers of the Heavenly Doctrines
of the New Jerusalem, given through Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772). Since that time churches have been formed throughout
the world. These doctrines have also been used by many people of different Christian faiths.
OUR BOOKROOM
A variety of Swedenborg's books -- books filled with a wealth of spiritual wisdom -- may be purchased at our church
in Glendale by appointment. Alternatively, the major publisher of Swedenborg's works in the U.S. -- the Swedenborg
Foundation, located in West Chester, Pennsylvania -- has a convenient toll-free number for orders:
